Yoga & Cultural Diplomacy

India's civilisational assets — yoga, Ayurveda, classical arts, a vast antiquities heritage — had never been organised into a deliberate instrument of foreign policy. Cultural diplomacy existed, but thinly funded and largely reactive. Meanwhile thousands of Indian antiquities smuggled out over decades sat in foreign museums and private collections, with almost no effort to bring them back.

In September 2014 the Prime Minister proposed an International Day of Yoga at the UN General Assembly. The resolution was adopted with 175 co-sponsors — a record for a resolution of its kind — and 21 June has been observed since 2015, now in more than 190 countries.

Soft power was built out across several channels at once: Ayush centres and yoga chairs at foreign universities; the International Solar Alliance and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, both India-founded multilateral bodies; Vaccine Maitri, which sent 3,012 lakh COVID vaccine doses by June 2023 (MEA) to nearly 100 countries (PIB); and domestic programmes such as Kashi Tamil Sangamam and Saurashtra Tamil Sangamam that revived civilisational links between Indian regions.

The antiquities record is the clearest measure of changed standing: 653 stolen antiquities had been retrieved from abroad since 2014 by May 2026, against 13 in all the years before. India's G20 presidency in 2023, held under the theme 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — One Earth, One Family, One Future', took the summit to 60 cities and secured the African Union's admission as a permanent member.
