About the data
India Unfolding is an independent, data-first project. This page explains where our numbers come from, how we compile them, and the principles we hold ourselves to — so you can trust the site and check it for yourself.
Where the numbers come from
Every figure is drawn from public sources — chiefly the Union Budget, Reserve Bank of India, line ministries (Road Transport, Railways, Power, Health, Defence, Electronics & IT and others), ISRO, the Ministry of External Affairs, PNGRB, NITI Aayog, the Census and national surveys (NFHS), and international bodies such as the World Bank and IMF. The specific source is noted on each sector.
How we compile the charts
For most counters we anchor to officially reported values — typically a start year (around 2014) and the latest available year — and, where a clean year-by-year series isn't published, we interpolate the years in between, which we state plainly. Figures we consider well-documented are marked “verified”; figures that are indicative, estimated, or drawn from industry rather than official series are clearly flagged “sample” so you know to treat them as approximate.
Our commitment to honesty
Progress is real, but it is never the whole story. Every sector on this site includes a “Challenges” section covering what is lagging, contested, or unresolved — from slow gains on nutrition to continued arms-import dependence. We don't cherry-pick the flattering numbers or hide the hard ones. Where India is still behind, we say so.
Independence & neutrality
India Unfolding is not affiliated with any political party, government body, or organisation, and carries no advertising. We chose the 2014–present window because it is a natural, recent decade to examine — not as an endorsement of any party or government. Development spans many hands: central and state governments, courts, businesses, scientists, workers and citizens. Our aim is to present sourced facts evenhandedly and let you draw your own conclusions. Reasonable people will disagree about causes and credit; the data is here so you can argue from evidence. Our sector data is presented neutrally; our blog essays may make an argument — clearly the author's view, and always sourced.
Keeping it current
India's numbers change constantly, and new official data arrives throughout the year. We update figures periodically, but some may lag the very latest release. If you spot something out of date or believe a figure is wrong, please tell us — with a public source — and we'll review and correct it.
