Mangalyaan reaches Mars
On 24 September 2014, India's Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan) slipped into orbit around the Red Planet — making India the first nation ever to reach Mars on its very first attempt, and the first in Asia to do so. Built by ISRO in record time and at a cost famously lower than many Hollywood space films, it was a stunning statement of frugal, world-class engineering that placed India firmly among the front rank of spacefaring nations.

The JAM revolution begins
In August 2014, the Jan Dhan Yojana launched the world's largest financial-inclusion drive, opening bank accounts for the unbanked — over 50 crore to date. Combined with Aadhaar and mobile phones (the 'JAM trinity') and the arrival of UPI in 2016, it let the government pay benefits directly to citizens and powered a digital-payments boom now worth trillions of dollars a year — India runs the world's largest real-time payments system.

Bridging the Northeast
The long-neglected Northeast gained two record-breaking river crossings. The 9.15-km Dhola–Sadiya bridge (Bhupen Hazarika Setu, 2017) became India's longest bridge, and the 4.94-km Bogibeel bridge (2018) its longest rail-road bridge — both spanning the mighty Brahmaputra system in Assam. Beyond the engineering, they slashed travel times, knit remote Arunachal and Assam closer to the rest of India, and carry real strategic weight near the frontier.

Statue of Unity

Mission Shakti
On 27 March 2019, India demonstrated an anti-satellite (ASAT) weapon, destroying one of its own satellites in low-Earth orbit under 'Mission Shakti'. Triple Talaq abolished
Following a Supreme Court ruling that it was unconstitutional, Parliament in 2019 outlawed instant 'triple talaq' — the practice by which a Muslim man could divorce his wife irrevocably in one sitting. Article 370 abrogated
On 5 August 2019, the government abrogated Article 370, ending the special constitutional status of Jammu & Kashmir and reorganising the region as Union Territories. Supporters hailed it as the full integration of J&K with the rest of India — extending national laws and, they argued, opening the way to investment and development. The move was challenged in court and upheld by the Supreme Court in December 2023, which also directed that statehood be restored.

Kartarpur Corridor
In November 2019, the Kartarpur Corridor opened, giving Indian Sikh pilgrims visa-free passage to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan — the place where Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, spent his final years. Ram Mandir, Ayodhya
One of India's longest and most emotive disputes reached resolution in November 2019, when the Supreme Court, in a unanimous verdict, awarded the Ayodhya site — revered by Hindus as the birthplace of Lord Ram (Ram Janmabhoomi) — for the building of a Ram temple. Atal Tunnel
Inaugurated in October 2020, the Atal Tunnel bores 9 km beneath the Rohtang Pass in the Himalayas — the world's longest highway tunnel above 10,000 feet.
