Temple & Heritage Corridors

A decade of investment restored India's great pilgrimage sites as world-class civic spaces. The Kashi Vishwanath Dham (2021) expanded a cramped temple approach from 3,000 sq ft to about 5 lakh sq ft. Mahakal Lok at Ujjain, the rebuilt Kedarnath Dham, the Char Dham all-weather roads and the PRASHAD scheme followed. The Ram Mandir at Ayodhya was consecrated in January 2024, and Prayagraj hosted a Maha Kumbh in 2025 that drew the largest recorded human gathering. This timeline traces those milestones.

Kashi Vishwanath Corridor begins
Work starts on clearing and rebuilding the approach to the Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi, connecting it to the Ganga ghats for the first time in centuries.

Why it matters Heritage is also economics. Restored corridors turned pilgrimage towns into year-round destinations: Varanasi, Ujjain and Ayodhya each report multi-fold jumps in visitors, and with them hotels, transport, guides and local trade. Domestic tourism is now among the fastest-growing sources of small-town employment in India.

  • Kashi Vishwanath Dham (2021): temple complex expanded from 3,000 sq ft to ~5 lakh sq ft.
  • Ram Mandir, Ayodhya consecrated 22 January 2024, with a new airport and redeveloped station.
  • Statue of Unity (2018) — at 182 m, the tallest statue in the world.
  • Mahakal Lok, Ujjain — ₹850 crore corridor, first phase opened 2022.
  • Maha Kumbh 2025 at Prayagraj drew an estimated 60 crore-plus pilgrims.

History

India's greatest pilgrimage sites were, for decades, physically hard to reach and harder to move through. The Kashi Vishwanath temple sat inside a warren of lanes with a 3,000 sq ft approach. Kedarnath had been devastated by the 2013 floods. Ayodhya's Ram Janmabhoomi dispute had run through the courts since 1950. Heritage was revered but not invested in.

Notable milestone

The Ram Mandir at Ayodhya was consecrated on 22 January 2024, following the Supreme Court's unanimous 2019 verdict — accompanied by a new international airport, a redeveloped railway station and a township plan for the city. The Kashi Vishwanath Dham, opened in December 2021, expanded the temple complex from 3,000 sq ft to about 5 lakh sq ft, connecting the shrine to the Ganga ghats for the first time in centuries.

How it works

The corridors are civic infrastructure projects, not just religious ones. Each combines land acquisition and decongestion, wide processional routes, crowd-flow management, sanitation, lighting, parking and museum or interpretation space — funded through the PRASHAD scheme of the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Culture, and matching state budgets. Swadesh Darshan built thematic circuits alongside: Buddhist, Ramayana, Sufi, coastal and North East.

Outlook

The economic return has been the surprise. Varanasi, Ujjain and Ayodhya each report multi-fold jumps in visitor numbers, and with them hotels, transport, guides, food and local trade. Prayagraj hosted the Maha Kumbh in 2025 with an estimated 60 crore-plus pilgrim footfall over the mela — the largest recorded human gathering, run on purpose-built temporary infrastructure that itself became a case study in mass-event logistics.
