Drug trafficking is an offence under the NDPS Act, 1985, enforced by the Narcotics Control Bureau, State police and central agencies. In 2016 the Government introduced the NCORD mechanism to coordinate ministries, departments and central and State enforcement agencies, and in 2019 restructured it into four tiers from the apex level down to districts. In December 2022 the Home Minister told the Lok Sabha that seizures rose from 22 lakh 45 thousand kg in 2006–2013 to 62 lakh 60 thousand kg in 2014–2022.
Anti-Narcotics
Drug law enforcement in India runs under the NDPS Act, 1985, through the Narcotics Control Bureau, State police and other agencies, coordinated since 2016 by the NCORD mechanism. On 26 June 2026 the Union Home Minister said drugs worth ₹1,84,000 crore were seized from 2014 to 2026, against ₹40,000 crore from 2004 to 2014, and drugs worth ₹89,896 crore were destroyed. On the demand side, the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, launched on 15 August 2020, has reached more than 29.68 crore people. Citizens can report drug trafficking anonymously on the MANAS helpline 1933, launched in July 2024. The counter shows drugs seized under the NDPS Act, in lakh kg, as recorded by NCRB for 2018–2022.

| Year | Drugs seized under NDPS Act |
|---|---|
| 2018 | 39.19 lakh kg |
| 2019 | 11.12 lakh kg |
| 2020 | 13.17 lakh kg |
| 2021 | 11.37 lakh kg |
| 2022 | 20.81 lakh kg |
Why it matters Drug dependence harms health, families and livelihoods, and trafficking networks feed other crime. Seizing and destroying drugs cuts supply, while awareness, counselling and treatment help people who are already dependent. An anonymous helpline lets anyone pass on information or seek help without fear.
- In December 2022 the Home Minister told the Lok Sabha that drugs seized rose from 22 lakh 45 thousand kg (2006–2013) to 62 lakh 60 thousand kg (2014–2022), and their value from ₹33 thousand crore to ₹97 thousand crore.
- In 2024, all law enforcement agencies seized drugs worth about ₹25,330 crore, against ₹16,100 crore in 2023 (MHA, February 2025).
- A drive to destroy 75,000 kg of drugs in 60 days in 2022 ended with 1,60,000 kg burned.

History
Notable milestone
At the 10th NCORD apex meeting on 26 June 2026, the Home Minister said drugs worth ₹1,84,000 crore were seized from 2014 to 2026, against ₹40,000 crore from 2004 to 2014. Drugs destroyed rose from ₹8,000 crore (3,26,000 kg) to ₹89,896 crore (42,47,000 kg) over the same periods. Cases registered rose from 1,73,000 to 8,75,000, and arrests from 1,95,000 to 10,97,000.
How it works
NCORD brings enforcement, health, social welfare and district officials together; by June 2026, 15,876 district-level and 266 State-level meetings had been held. Seized drugs are destroyed in organised drives, such as the January 2025 fortnight to destroy about 1 lakh kg worth about ₹8,600 crore. The MANAS helpline 1933, launched on 18 July 2024, offers a toll-free number, web portal and app for anonymous reports and de-addiction advice. The Ministry of Social Justice runs the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, begun on 15 August 2020 in 272 districts and extended to all districts in August 2023.
Outlook
On 26 June 2026 the Home Minister released the Vision Document on Drug Control (2026-2029) and the NCB Annual Report-2025, and launched an online disposal fortnight to destroy 2,09,500 kg of drugs valued at ₹6,000 crore. The Ministry of Home Affairs is working towards exclusive NDPS courts for faster trials in major cases. On the demand side, the Government supports 765 de-addiction and rehabilitation facilities under the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (July 2026).
