History
One grid, one tariff
Big trunk lines like the Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga (Jagdishpur-Haldia-Bokaro-Dhamra) carried gas to eastern India for the first time. A unified One-Nation-One-Grid-One-Tariff structure arrived in 2024, and City Gas Distribution has been authorised across 307 geographical areas covering almost the entire population — delivering piped gas to homes and CNG to vehicles.
How it works
Natural gas moves through a growing national pipeline grid that connects import terminals and gas fields to power plants, factories, homes and vehicles. India is stitching these regional networks into 'one nation, one gas grid' with a unified tariff — a single, distance-blind price — so gas is as easy to buy in a far state as near a terminal. City Gas Distribution then delivers it as piped cooking gas (PNG) and vehicle fuel (CNG).
Outlook
The goal is to raise gas from about 6% to 15% of India's energy mix by 2030 as a cleaner bridge between coal and renewables. The next step is lifting domestic gas output, expanding the pipeline grid by another ~10,000 km, adding LNG import terminals, and rolling city-gas connections into hundreds more districts — so cleaner cooking and transport fuel reach far more homes and vehicles.
The road ahead
The next step is lifting domestic gas output beyond about half of demand to cut costly LNG imports, extending pipelines into the East and Northeast, and raising gas toward the 15% energy-mix goal for 2030.
