India has a 7,500-km coastline and a vast ocean territory, but for decades explored little of its depths. The Deep Ocean Mission was approved in 2021 with an outlay of about Rs 4,077 crore over five years, run by the Ministry of Earth Sciences. Its boldest goal: send Indians to the deep-sea floor in an indigenous submersible.

Why it matters The deep ocean holds polymetallic nodules rich in cobalt, nickel and rare metals, unique biodiversity, and clues to the climate. Reaching 6,000 m would put India in a club of only a handful of nations, and anchor a sustainable 'blue economy'.

History
Notable milestone
The mission's flagship is Matsya-6000 (Sanskrit for 'fish'), a crewed submersible built by NIOT Chennai to carry three aquanauts to 6,000 metres inside a titanium sphere. In 2025, an Indian became the first to dive to 5,000 m aboard a French submersible — a key step toward Matsya-6000's own deep dive, targeted for 2027.
How it works
The titanium personnel sphere protects the crew from crushing pressure — over 600 times that at the surface. The submersible carries life support for 12 hours (96 in emergencies), plus sensors, samplers and robotic arms to study the seabed. Sister projects map polymetallic nodules, ocean climate and deep-sea biodiversity.
Outlook
The deep sea is the next resource and science frontier. India holds exploration rights over large areas of the Central Indian Ocean for polymetallic nodules — rock lumps rich in nickel, cobalt, copper and manganese used in batteries. Reaching 6,000 m crewed would put India among only the US, Russia, China, France and Japan.
The road ahead
Deep-sea engineering is unforgiving: pressure-testing the sphere, certifying life support, and running staged dives (shallow first, then deep) all take time — which is why the 6-km dive slipped toward 2027. Turning exploration into responsible, sustainable use — without harming fragile ecosystems — is the longer challenge.
