Electronics Manufacturing

In a decade India went from importing most of its electronics to making them. Electronics production grew roughly six-fold, from about $30 billion (FY14) to $127 billion (FY25), and mobile-phone output soared from $2 billion to $60 billion — India is now the world's second-largest mobile maker, producing ~330 million phones a year. The share of phones sold in India that are locally made jumped from 26% to over 99%. The counter shows electronics production.

National electronics goal

Why it matters Electronics is now among India's top exports and a big employer (~25 lakh jobs), central to Make-in-India and reducing import dependence.

History

A decade ago India assembled little and imported most of its electronics and phones. Phased manufacturing plans, import duties and PLI incentives flipped that: electronics production rose from ~$30 bn (FY14) to ~$127 bn (FY25), and India became the world's second-largest mobile-phone maker.

Made in India

The share of phones sold in India that are made in India rose from 26% to over 99%, and exports crossed $20 bn. Global giants like Apple and Samsung now build flagship models here, and component and semiconductor ecosystems are being seeded.

How it works

India built its electronics base the way many Asian economies did — starting with final assembly (fitting imported parts into finished phones), drawn in by the PLI scheme and higher duties on finished imports. Global contract manufacturers like Foxconn and Indian firms like Dixon set up plants; the value added is still modest, but each year more of the components — displays, batteries, chargers, and soon chips — are made locally.

Outlook

The numbers are striking: India is the world's second-largest mobile-phone maker, electronics output has crossed ₹11 lakh crore, and mobile exports passed $20 billion in 2024-25. The next target is component and chip localisation — a new components incentive scheme and the semiconductor fabs aim to raise the share of value actually created in India, turning 'assembled in India' into 'made in India'.

The road ahead

The hard next step is deepening the base — moving from assembly toward design and building more of the high-value components and chips at home.
