Digital India, launched on 1 July 2015, aimed to transform India into a digitally empowered society — connecting villages with broadband, moving services online and building a digital-identity stack on top of Aadhaar. Its citizen-facing flagship, DigiLocker, gives every user a cloud wallet for official documents. Users grew from a standing start to over 50 crore by 2025, holding around 950 crore documents with legal validity equal to paper.

History
Notable projects
DigiLocker is one layer of the wider 'India Stack'. Alongside it sit Aadhaar (138 crore digital IDs), UMANG (1,600+ government services in one app), DIKSHA (the world's largest education platform), and e-KYC that made opening a bank account a paperless, minutes-long task. Together these have saved thousands of crores in administrative costs and reduced fraud.
How it works
Digital India works by moving government services online and giving every citizen a verified digital identity and paperless document wallet. Through DigiLocker, people store and share official documents — licences, certificates, mark-sheets — legally valid without a printout; the UMANG app bundles hundreds of services into one; and village-level Common Service Centres bring these online services to people not yet online themselves.
Outlook
The goal is a citizen who rarely needs paper or a counter. Next come wider 5G and fibre to villages under BharatNet, more services behind a single sign-on, stronger data protection under the new DPDP law, and AI-assisted delivery in local languages — while closing the rural internet gap (still about 49% rural vs 74% urban) that leaves many offline.
The road ahead
The next step is closing the digital divide — rural internet (~49%) still trails urban (~74%), so reaching older, poorer and less-literate citizens, with strong data-protection safeguards, is the ongoing work.
