History
Banking the last mile
India Post Payments Bank (2018) brought Aadhaar-enabled, doorstep banking to remote villages with crores of accounts, while parcel logistics, passport counters and export hubs (Dak Ghar Niryat Kendra) added new roles.
How it works
India Post runs the largest postal network on earth — about 1.65 lakh post offices, the vast majority in villages — originally for mail, now repurposed as a delivery platform for far more. Through the India Post Payments Bank and the older Post Office savings schemes, that village network doubles as a bank for the unbanked; it also carries Aadhaar services, government payments, and increasingly parcels for e-commerce, using its unmatched last-mile reach.
Outlook
With about 1.65 lakh post offices — some 90% of them rural — India Post reaches places no private courier or bank finds worth serving, and the Payments Bank has brought basic banking to millions. The work in progress is turning a vast legacy network into a modern logistics and financial-services business — competing in e-commerce parcel delivery, digitising operations, and monetising that unmatched reach rather than running at a loss.
